Extinction is Forever

Description

From left to right: Liz, Bicho, and Katrina.

I've seen so many emotional anti-captivity posters, drawing, photo-manipulations, etc.  I'm not really fond of them, nor do I feel 100% comfortable with them.  But I couldn't resist making this!

These animals would have disappeared.

Liz is a Red Wolf.  Red wolves would have gone extinct were it not for captive breeding efforts.

Bicho is a Gray Wolf.  Gray wolves were nearly eradicated in America, until captive breeding efforts were made.  They now have a huge population in North America, and have been taken off of the Endangered list.  Captive wolves continue to educate the public on the true nature of wolves and the importance of conserving them.

Katrina is a Black-Footed Ferret.  Black-footed ferrets are suffering from disease and habitat loss, like so many other animals in today's world.  They are being bred in captivity, and hopefully will be able to recover.

Without zoos, these three species and countless others would be extinct!

So before you go on a rant about how ALL captivity is 5,000,000,000% evil, think about the species that you would destroy if you had it your way.

If you can't leave a mature, well-educated comment, don't comment at all!  This is your only warning.

I agree with what you said. A few years ago I visited a zoo called Port Lymphe, which is near Lydd, and they have animals on the "Extinct in the Wild" list. They have herds of Pere David's Deer, a deer species on the brink of extinction, and are aiming to try to bring the deer species back to its' native range. The animals they have are from every continent on Earth, all of which are in danger of going extinct in the future. There's even a colony of Scottish Wildcats. The Pure-blooded Scottish Wildcats are in danger of going extinct in less than three years, and the zoo is trying to reintroduce the descendants of the Wildcats to their natural habitat in the future. The zoo is owned by The Aspinall Foundation, which was established to return the descendants of the animals in captivity in their zoos back to their native ranges. I read a few years ago of a rhino who was found dead in an Indonesian rainforest. The saddest thing was that the rhino was born in Port Lymphe, and had recently been released into the wild. What zoos do is trying to save animals in danger of extinction and highlighting their plight.
